Internet protocol (IP) technology is revolutionizing the telephone business, with voice-over-IP promising to quickly replace traditional circuit-switched telephony. Now, IP technology promises to bring the same radical transformation to the television business, withcontent providers, telephone companies and even cable companies drawing up plans to transmit programming via IP over broadband connections.

But, will multichannel IP video becoming a reality any time soon, or are the technological, business and even legal barriers so high that years, or even decades, will pass before IP video arrives? Will video-over-IP, with its capacity to transmit unlimited content from centralized servers, ever replace traditional multichannel video programmingdistribution technologies such as cable or satellite? What would happen to traditional television business models if video-over-IP becomes a meaningful distribution platform?

Pike & Fischer’s communications analyst Cynthia Brumfield questioned leaders whoare pushing the video-over-IP envelope, including Josh Goldman, CEO of Akimbo Systems, Bob Greene, SVP of Advanced Services for Starz Entertainment Group and Jeremy Allaire, Chairman and Founder of Vidmark. This 90-minute event included 25 minutes of interactive Q&A.
