About the Speakers:
Tom Blue
Senior Fertilizer Industry Consultant, Blue, Johnson & Associates
- Thomas Blue has been with Blue, Johnson & Associates Inc. since 1984. Prior to that he was with SRI International, where he started as an industrial economist in 1960 before becoming Director of Agricultural Chemicals Consulting in 1973. Tom now works as a highly-sought-after consultant on fertilizers, related minerals and chemical products. His many areas of expertise include acquisition analyses and assistance; natural gas and other raw material purchasing practices; project feasibilities and opportunity assessments; profit planning; supply/demand/cost/price forecasting; contract evaluations and price arbitration; trade trends; market and customer profiles; distribution; criteria for investment decisions; and environmental analyses. Tom has also developed various multi-client studies profiling the supply/demand economics of nitrogen, phosphate, potash, sulfur, methanol and natural gas.

Dr. Gerald Bange
Chairman, World Outlook Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture
- Gerald A. Bange joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1970 as an agricultural marketing specialist for the Agricultural Research Service. In 1975, he transferred to the Foreign Agricultural Service as an agricultural economist where, in 1981, he became Director of the Foreign Production Estimates Division and, in January 1983, he was appointed Deputy Assistant Administrator for International Agricultural Statistics. In October 1983, he transferred to the World Agricultural Outlook Board where he served as Deputy Chairperson until March 1994 at which time he was appointed to his present position as Chairperson of the Board. Dr. Bange has received numerous awards including the Department’s Superior Service Award and Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive. He majored in agricultural economics at the University of Maryland where he earned a B.S. in 1966, M.S. in 1969, and Ph.D. in 1975.

Bruce Vernon
Sales and Marketing Manager, Mid Kansas Cooperative
- Bruce Vernon is manager of sales and marketing for Mid Kansas Cooperative (MKC), a full-service farm coop headquartered in Moundridge, Kan. MKC has 37 locations and some 7,000 members in central Kansas, covering a service area of more than 12,600 square miles. Before joining MKC, Bruce was director of crop nutrients marketing and risk management for Agriliance. In that position, he and his team were responsible for the introduction and management of price and supply risk management applications. Prior to joining Agriliance, Bruce was a regional manager for Farmland Industries. He joined Farmland in 1982 and held various sales, marketing and management positions in the company’s business divisions.
